Tales of Feral Youth
Author, Alan Harland
I was very young. It was one of my first forays into the deeper woods alone. I had somehow eluded my mother's watchful eye (there were five others devising various means of escape also). I had been to this place with my brothers, and walked through a cut in a stone wall down a short path to a pond. As my view opened onto the water, I knew instinctively to freeze. I lowered myself slowly down to make myself less conspicuous, and watched. On a raft that neighborhood boys had built was a heron that had caught a large bullfrog, and was tearing it apart live to eat. My heart ached for the unfortunate frog, yet I held no malice toward the heron. I felt a revelation in my heart at having witnessed one small act in God’s Great Nature.

Equine Communication in a Story
Judy writes Slater Mountain from her deep reservoir of equine and horsemanship knowledge. Each chapter is a full lesson in the communication between horses and humans. This technical wisdom is imparted through a believable and engaging family story of life on a horse farm on a distant mountain. The main character Bailey Mathews is thrust into a rescue mission with her Mustang, Nugget, the trial proves her maturity and capability in a rustic world fraught with the everyday dangers of rugged ranch life. A sweet spot of hope when emergency strikes is the handsome Noah who comes to her aid. Their meeting kindles a few sparks of teen romance with the boy from the far side of the mountain.
If you are an avid equestrian hoping to learn better communication with your horse then Slater Mountain: The Journey, book one of the series imparts a wealth of knowledge for you.

“In Yellowstone, book three of Judy Ricketts-White’s Slater Mountain series for young readers, we get not only an engaging story and likeable characters, but a good measure of honest-to-goodness horse training gold. The author clearly and effortlessly weaves into her story line the principles and techniques of ‘natural’ horsemanship, an approach that is humane, highly effective, and immensely satisfying. There’s no better way to impart useful knowledge than to wrap it in a good yarn, and once again, Ricketts-White demonstrates her skill at doing just that.”

2 thumbs up from a horsey reader

This review was authored by my 10 year old daughter.
The book was very fast paced and had several unexpected twists. I loved it and I would recommend it to my friends, including non-horsey friends. As a horse rider, I found the horse portions very accurate and enjoyable.

                                                                           – Rob S., Connecticut

5 stars - January 24, 2016
A poignant story about persevering through challenges, respecting family and taking on responsibility and risks. The relationships between characters include not only those among fellow humans, but instructively, also horses extending the tale's arc into the realm of a coming-of-age classic.
